“Learning Mandarin Chinese is a literal superpower. It instantly connects you with over one billion native speakers.”
Reason number five: Language and Culture.
Welcome to the fifth and final episode of ‘Five Reasons Why I Love Living in China’—where I look at the reality of daily life here compared to back home in Ireland.
Mandarin fluency is a highly sought-after asset in international business, tech, diplomacy, and global supply chains. But on top of that, the cognitive benefits are profound—simply being immersed in this language boosts your memory and keeps your brain sharp. It’s a lifelong asset you carry with you anywhere.
But beyond the language, the sheer cultural diversity here will leave you speechless.
During my travels to Yunnan in 2025, I walked through historic ancient towns and experienced the rich traditions of the Naxi and Bai peoples. In Guizhou and Guangxi, we received the incredibly warm hospitality of Miao and Dong families, who treated us to amazing local food and traditional songs.
And practicing Tai Chi in its legendary birthplace—the Wudang Mountains—was an unforgettable lesson in harmony where ancient Taoist philosophy truly came to life.
I hope this series has given you a fresh perspective. Most importantly, I hope you come experience the real China for yourself—not the distorted version in the mainstream media, but the authentic reality I get to live every day.
