In January 2025, Chairman Pat McCarthy of the Ireland Sino Institute (Chinese name Zhang Xiaoai 张小爱), pictured center in the featured image above, was conferred the title of Honorary Ambassador for Tourism and Culture by the Chinese Government. To celebrate this recognition, he was invited on a three-day tour of Liaoning Province, where he and his team experienced the rich cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and scenic hotspots of the region.

Irishman Relives the Spirit of the Qing Dynasty

During their journey, they visited several museums, including the Songhua Inkstone Museum in Benxi, Liaoning, where they learned about the art of ink grinding using traditional inksticks and inkstones. An inkstick is carefully ground against the surface of an inkstone, with a small amount of water added to create liquid ink. The inkstone also features a reservoir, known as an ink pool or ink well, where the ground ink collects.

The Songhua inkstone, a significant tool in Chinese calligraphy, was widely used during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). As Pat McCarthy explored the museum, he reflected on the rich history of the Qing era, stating that he felt the spirit of Nurhaci, the founding father of the Qing Dynasty, come alive within him.

Irish delegation visit Benxi cave

Another major highlight of the tour was Benxi Cave, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This natural karst cave, formed millions of years ago, is renowned for its magnificent and mysterious beauty. Inside, towering stalagmites rise like forests, delicate stone curtains hang gracefully, and stalactites take on various shapes, resembling a natural underground palace. When illuminated, the cave shimmers beautifully, offering visitors breathtaking views.

The Ireland Sino Institute delegation also had the opportunity to enjoy cultural dances and the local cuisine of Benxi City. By coincidence, on that day, Pat McCarthy was served roast potatoes, reminding him of home. He mentioned to the restaurant staff that the Irish would always feel welcome here.

The following video showcases Benxi Cave and the Benxi experience as a world-class tourist destination in all its beauty.

The Irish Will Always Feel Welcome in Liaoning

The Ireland Sino Institute MISSION

Ireland and Liaoning share a strong relationship, with nearly 70% of the Chinese population in Ireland originating from Liaoning.

While Pat McCarthy continues to advance initiatives strengthening ties between Ireland, Europe, and China, his ultimate vision remains clear—to lead a distinguished delegation from Beijing to Ireland, fostering deeper diplomatic and cultural connections.

It may not happen this year or next, but with his unwavering dedication, the path toward this milestone is already being paved.
