SAFETY FIRST
Welcome to ‘Five Reasons Why I Love Living in China’—a video series where I look at the realities of daily life here, compared to life back home in Ireland.
Let’s start with reason number one: Safety.
Now, Ireland is a safe country overall, especially when you compare it to the rest of the Anglosphere and the larger European nations. But even so, walking alone at night in major cities can still feel a bit risky, particularly for women.
In China, it is a completely different story.
I have always told people back home: you can walk absolutely anywhere in China, at any time of the day or night, 365 days a year, and never run into a problem. It truly is one of the safest countries on earth.
I can think of a few reasons for this. There is a deep cultural emphasis on harmony, mutual respect, and a real sense of community. You combine that with strict gun control, little to no drug use, and very low rates of crime and homelessness.
Now, critics will probably point the finger at surveillance… but let’s be honest, surveillance is everywhere—even in Western countries with high crime rates and dangerous streets.
The difference is, here, you actually get to feel safe.
Make sure to stick around for Part 2 of the series, where we talk about something everyone is dealing with right now: housing.
